Sure I enjoy going on vacation, attending a play, or having the odd outdoor adventure. But I often find that it's the simple things in life that offer the most pleasure. I was reflecting on this as I sat on my deck having my morning coffee. This little ritual contains some key elements that give me a lot of satisfaction.
First of all, I get a lot of pleasure from the cup itself. I have a collection of pottery mugs (I love pottery) and I find my coffee drinking experience is so much better when I use one of my 'cool' mugs instead of just a plain old one from the cupboard.
Second, I love to listen to the sound of the leaves as they rustle in the breeze. My back yard is full of trees and connected to a green space, so 'nature' is right there for me to enjoy. Unfortunately, I need to take full advantage of these times since its only really nice enough to enjoy for four months of the year.
Third, I love the feel of a certain kind of pen. You know the kind that just seems to flow? What does this have to do with the above scene? I usually write in a journal as part of my daily devotions, and for the four months mentioned above, I like to do this on my deck with coffee. See how it all fits together now?
Take the time today to identify those 'little things' that make your life more pleasant. Then take purposeful steps to make sure you find the time for them, and bask in the enjoyment that they bring.
What are some of the 'little things' that you take pleasure in?
The little things that I enjoy?
ReplyDelete1. A good, LARGE hot cup of coffee at the beginning of my day, laced with half-and-half and sugar.
2. Nice weather. I love a nice sunny day when the birds are singing and you see those clouds in the vivid blue sky and it's not too hot or too cold - exquisite.
3. Rose bushes. I love seeing my rose bush in bloom - seeing those large flowers as they open up and mature. Plus, the smell is so divine!
4. A vanilla milkshake from Chick-Fil-A! Best milkshake in the world! Their chocolate shake is pretty awesome, too!
Ah yes, Cecelia! It would be chocolate for me, though!
ReplyDeleteI totally hear you and it sounds good to me! That's how I feel when I sit on the deck in our far back section with our dogs and away from everything commercial.
ReplyDeleteHmm. Good question. I'm on vacation at the moment, and you would think that I would be filling my days with little enjoyable moments. Unfortunately, I've been spending way too much time on this laptop as I reclaim my publishing situation. I recently lost my small pub and have set out on my own now. Just got my first book on Amazon and am doing a free event this weekend. Having written all of that, however, I know what you speak of is terribly important. I have next week off as well and will do a much better job of it then. I will endevor to sit in front of that film I've been wanting to watch (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen), listen to some music, spend the evening out on my patio w/ a glass of wine, etc.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder, Tracy.

It's little things like listening to music with a glass of wine that sound good to me!
ReplyDeleteThe sound of wind coming up from below as you're perched on top of a cliff. That's one of life's great pleasures.
ReplyDeleteSounds scary to me william!
